A study of the health effects of road congestion on pregnant mothers and their babies, funded by the MacArthur Foundation, supports other research showing how children suffer from air pollution near roadways in Los Angeles. "The most immediate problem, in Los Angeles and elsewhere, is that city planners are jamming family housing and schools up against busy urban roadways, where land is cheap," writes Jill Stewart.
