The New York State Assembly's Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee has approved a bill that would require food companies to label products that contain genetically engineered ingredients; a date for a vote by the full Assembly has not been set. The bill also stipulates penalties for companies that do not comply and would affect produce as well as packaged foods. The food industry has been fighting such regulations, stating GE ingredients are safe and the labeling requirements would cause food prices to rise.
