As consumers shift from regular meals to snacking throughout the day, they're doing more snacking early in the day and expanding their definition of what constitutes a snack, according to NPD Group. People still buy traditional snack foods such as fries, chips and pretzels, but they're also adding burgers, burritos, breakfast sandwiches and other main course items to the list, the report says. "[They] don't want to eat a full meal so they are snacking throughout the day. Some of it has to do with price, some has to do with craving, [and some are] too busy for a full meal," said NPD analyst Bonnie Riggs.
