A report by the Center for Health Policy Research at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy says about 1 in 3 hospitalized patients older than 34 suffers from diabetes. Researchers found that hospitalizations for patients with diabetes cost $2,200 more than for those without diabetes. Patients 65 and older accounted for nearly 60% of admissions for people with diabetes, while blacks, Asian-Americans, Native Americans and Latinos were more likely than non-Hispanic whites to be hospitalized, researchers said.
