Scientists in Portugal are building a pilot-scale facility for growing microalgae with the aim of manufacturing biomass for biofuel production. The project's objective is to produce up to 120 dry metric tons of biomass annually using a novel approach. "We hope that our results will attract attention from investors interested in financing a 10-hectare [24.7-acre] site to produce microalgae in a sustainable manner on an industrial scale," said Neil Hindle, coordinator of the Europe-based InteSusAl project.
