Infants whose mothers took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors during pregnancy to treat depression had a higher risk of having Chiari type I brain malformation compared with those not exposed to the drugs, according to a small study in Neuropsychopharmacology. Prenatal exposure to SSRIs was also associated with shorter length, earlier birth and longer stays in neonatal intensive care units.
