First Solar's Agua Caliente solar project in Arizona uses 5.2 million PV panels spread over almost 10 square miles -- and spotting maintenance problems on such a large project can be a problem. First Solar is now experimenting with drones packed with high-resolution cameras and heat sensors to spot malfunctioning solar modules from the skies. The robots could also soon be used to spot wildlife that enters the solar farm, allowing it to be safely removed before it comes to harm.
