Allergan's injectable gel Juvederm Volbella XC has been granted FDA approval for use in lip augmentation and correction of perioral rhytids in adults over 21 years old and will be available in October. The approval was based on several clinical trials that demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of the drug.
Galderma's Restylane Lyft with lidocaine is a hyaluronic acid-based filler approved for treating moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles as well as volume loss in adult patients. Allergan's Juvederm Voluma also contains hyaluronic acid and lidocaine and is approved for filling lost volume in the cheeks. Facial plastic surgeon Andrew Jacono uses both but says the effects of Voluma might last longer.
Plastic surgeons in Turkey removed soft tissue from the face of a man who had a face transplant in August after he began to experience organ failure. The surgeons replaced the tissue with some from the patient's thigh.
University of California, San Diego, professor Adah Almutairi and her brother, plastic surgeon Khalid Almutairi, have devised a way to melt fat by injecting gold nanoparticles into the fatty area, passing an infrared laser light over the area to activate the nanoparticles, then extracting the melted fat and nanoparticles using h a thin needle. They founded a company to develop the technology, which they have named NanoLipo, and hope to begin clinical trials this year.
A single injection of cosmetic botulinum toxin into the facial muscles related to emotional expression can alleviate symptoms of depression, researchers from Hannover Medical School in Germany reported at the American Psychiatric Association 2014 Annual Meeting. Patients with chronic and treatment-resistant depression who received a botulinum toxin injection in glabellar frown lines experienced higher reductions in depression indicators than patients who received saline injections.
