The Kansas State Board of Education this week voted unanimously to authorize two districts as the state's first innovative districts. The designation exempts the districts from some state laws and regulations to foster innovation in the schools. Guidelines adopted by the board require districts to draft bylaws and to include three members from the state board and the education department to sit on the innovative districts board. Six more districts are seeking the special recognition from the state board.
