Lockheed Martin says its all-purpose Orion spacecraft makes sense for serving a variety of space missions, contrary to a report by the National Research Council's Committee on Human Space Flight, which says specific missions need customized craft. "Orion ... was designed to envelope a pretty broad set of missions that cover most of the destinations that you can imagine," said Jim Crocker, vice president and general manager of civil space for Denver-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems. Orion can be adapted with add-ons for various missions, he noted.
