Companies that seek innovation must set up a measurement system built around specific goals, such as changing the international-domestic revenue share or raising the percentage of consumers who trade up to higher levels of products or services, writes Soren Kaplan, author of "Leapfrogging." Innovation-measurement systems should also track efforts to boost a company's culture of innovation, by examining where ideas and projects are coming from, Kaplan adds.
