A North Carolina district is expanding its career and technical education curriculum for middle-school students to help better connect students with trends in the job market. Educators say students often are very engaged in vocational courses and they have a chance to learn more about potential careers. Judy Honeycutt, assistant director of CTE in the district, however, says they needed to shift the focus from computer competency to more advanced training in engineering, advanced manufacturing, the medical field and business.
