Snake bites in people are up 75% this year, according to the Carolinas Poison Center in Charlotte, N.C., and veterinarians in the state are also seeing the effects of snakes in practice. Veterinarian Mike Grafinger said snake bites are common in dogs this time of year. Pets are often exposed to snakes when sniffing around during walks, and they tend to suffer bites on the head and neck. Treatment is often effective, but about 5% of dogs do not survive, said Dr. Grafinger.
