Pilot and columnist Dick Trail recounts being asked to help fly a family out to California to be at the side of their son who was about to undergo surgery. "[S]omebody had to do it," he writes, "so why not this old guy?" On the flight out, Trail chose a meandering route of old designated airways, and on the return, he had two young men who were new to general aviation ride in the cockpit with him.
