Plastic surgeons are in the business of helping people look their best, and they have an obligation to guide patients through the process and ensure they seek cosmetic procedures for the right reasons, writes Robert Grant, chief of the combined Divisions of Plastic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center. Fewer patients are seeking plastic surgery at foreign resorts after well-publicized reports of dangerous complications, and Grant reassures his potential patients that having their procedure performed in the U.S. will optimize results and lower risks. Patients who have recently endured a divorce or who bring in photos of celebrities might not be in the right frame of mind to make important decisions regarding surgery, Grant notes.
