In a small study of acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke patients, those who were hospitalized two or more times a year before the stroke admission had a greater chance of being readmitted within 30 days. Stroke patients with a history of cancer, coronary artery disease or congestive heart failure or an absence of hyperlipidemia also had a higher readmission risk. The findings appear in the American Journal of Medical Quality.
