A growing number of sewage treatment plants are using anaerobic digesters to turn food waste into biogas. The food waste is blended with sewage and yields enough gas to help offset the plants' operating costs. "We no longer consider it to be a waste product -- it's something we're trying to manage as a resource," explains professor Mark Hutchinson.
