Novelist Tim Lott in this column describes a trip to Bali in which the father of two observed a school that focuses on the whole child, does not mandate testing and experiences no issues with bullying. In short, the school represented a model of how he wanted his children to learn. Lott notes that the model used by the school, in which outdoor lessons are common and students are encouraged to explore, stands in contrast to one under which his children are struggling with anxiety over testing and homework.
