Technology is evolving to support a new kind of infrastructure management that enables energy grids to leverage localized assets with cutting-edge storage to cut costs and alleviate the pressures on traditional power networks. Analysts say these microgrids -- which are gaining traction in high-cost, hard-to-service areas using alternative energy resources -- will generate $8.4 billion in revenues by the end of the decade.
