Chimpanzees communicate using a system of gestures, according to researchers who have decoded some of the chimps' body language. The scientists have identified 19 specific messages communicated by 66 gestures that they gleaned while studying and filming chimps in Uganda, detailed in Current Biology. "The big message [from this study] is that there is another species out there that is meaningful in its communication, so that's not unique to humans," said lead researcher Catherine Hobaiter.
