A parasite found in the fecal matter of cats has led researchers to develop a highly effective treatment for cancer in lab tests. Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center researchers have engineered the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii into a new cancer-blasting version. "By gaining preferential access to the inside of powerful innate immune cell types, our mutated strain of T. gondii reprograms the natural power of the immune system to clear tumor cells and cancer," said Barbara Fox, a senior research associate.
