Instructional coach David Ginsburg in this blog post recommends that teachers demonstrate "tough love" to hold students to higher standards, despite how hard it may be for teachers to do so. Ginsburg describes his realization that allowing tardy students to make up missed work actually enabled their "self-defeating" behavior. However, students took responsibility for their actions once he allowed them to experience the natural consequences of such behaviors, he writes.
