Most serious falls in nursing homes occur in the morning among those who are more ambulatory, older and female. A Bavarian study looked at 70,000+ falls in a one-year period. 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. showed a more than 60% increased chance of transfer to hospital, demonstrating a more serious fall. More than 50% of falls were residents aged 80 to 89. 75% of the falls were in residents' rooms/bathrooms. Women 90+ with a fall led to a 50% increased risk of hospital transfers compared to those less than 70 years. (Free abstract only.)
