Apple's reportedly plans to invest $700 million to introduce tougher synthetic sapphire screens on its latest iPhone models to replace Gorilla Glass but the material will cost $16 per screen -- more than five times as much as Corning's product, according to The Wall Street Journal. "Nobody has ever invested this much money on sapphire," Yole Développement analyst Eric Virey said. Some analysts suggest Apple may have found ways to offset those higher manufacturing costs, although no details were outlined.
