The Fresh Market has announced the arrival of the new lower-calorie Coca-Cola Life in its Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina stores. The Greensboro, N.C.,-based retailer is the exclusive retail partner for the launch of the sugar- and stevia-sweetened drink through mid-October.
Tuscaloosa, Ala., residents will be able to keep their glass out of landfills starting next year thanks to a new West Alabama Recycling Partnership that has secured a grant for a glass pulverizer and several recycling containers. "This grant gives us the ability to use the glass locally in Tuscaloosa, not only keeping the glass from being landfilled, but offsetting the cost of materials such as sand and gravel that it will replace in certain projects," said Tuscaloosa Environmental Services Department Director Shane Daugherty.
Oliver Winery turned to glass packaging from Owens-Illinois to make its BeanBlossom Hard Cider stand out. The winery picked a brown glass bottle that makes the cider evoke a shared, classic treat. "The experience is more like drinking wine -- you get to appreciate the color and aroma of the cider, which enriches the taste," said Bill Oliver, owner of Oliver Winery.
Bottles with augmented reality codes and thermodynamic inks will continue to gain popularity, supporting an overall trend toward theatrical packaging, according to Mark Ryan, innovations manager at TRM Packaging. Lightweight packaging also will continue to advance, but it is important that companies make sure packages remain strong and appropriate to the product. "Lightweighting for the sake of it is counterproductive," Ryan said.
The growing popularity of nail polish, for both home and salon use, is driving demand for a variety of polish packaging, including unique bottle shapes and darker bottles that protect the light-sensitive products used with gel polish. "Using an amber bottle, and then spray coating that, rather than starting with clear glass, gives a product extra protection," said Len Loffler, marketing director for New High Glass, which recently introduced an amber-colored bottle.
