Biotech crops can be used to fight common plant diseases that threaten food production, write Steve Savage and XiaoZhi Lim from the Genetic Literacy Project. Biotechnology, in particular, can be used to develop solutions for systemic diseases that are spread by insect vectors, crop diseases for which traditional breeding is too slow and/or interferes with major quality attributes, and diseases that can't be safely and effectively controlled with chemicals.
