Retired Air Force Col. Jack Thorpe has led an effort to develop the Next-Generation Incident Command System, which creates a coordination model for firefighters similar to what the military uses on the battlefield. The online command system is contained in a University of California, San Diego, supercomputer. Using Google Maps technology, it can speed the time it takes fire officials to coordinate a response to a major wildfire.
