To meet demand for smartphone chips, and parts for the rumored new iPhone in particular, Japanese semiconductor manufacturers are keeping their plants running through the summer holidays. Toshiba, Sony Semiconductor and Fujitsu Semiconductor all report that their wafer fabrication facilities are operating at full production capacity. Japan's chipmakers are also facing rising competition from Chinese companies in the phone chip market, as is Korea's Samsung Electronics.
