On Aug. 1, the Common Application -- used by more than 500 colleges and universities -- opened for the 2015 admissions cycle. Launched in 1975, the Common Application is used for applying to selective schools that consider more than grade-point averages and test scores when choosing students. Despite technical difficulties last year, more than 813,000 students completed 3.45 million applications, and more than 600 applications were filed on the first day of the current cycle.
