Smartphone owners should also avoid using off-brand chargers, which can damage the phone's charger port or battery by supplying the wrong voltage, Nichols said.
A team of Rice University and Indian Institute of Science researchers recommends crushing electronic waste into nanodust for recycling, allowing components to be separated more easily. A low-temperature cryo-mill can be used to crush the electronic materials into tiny particles, said Chandra Sekhar Tiwary, a postdoctoral researcher at Rice and a researcher at the Indian Institute of Science.
