- Students head to summer school before retaking state exams
For many Texas high-school students, the last day of school was just a temporary reprieve from hitting the books. School administrators have been contacting students who failed this year's more difficult end-of-year exams and encouraging them to attend summer school to prepare to retake the tests in July. - Teachers, like pitchers, make saves every day
Baseball statisticians keep track of "saves" performed by relief pitchers who record the final outs in close games, writes Sam Chaltain in this blog post. In classrooms, teachers make saves every day -- when they help focus a student with attention issues or mediate a classroom conflict, for example. Keeping track of those saves, Chaltain writes, reminds us that a teacher's skill needs to be measured by more than students' academic growth. The Huffington Post

- Educator: 3 reasons why I became a teacher leader
Erin Kelly, a middle-school science department chairwoman in Fairfax, Va., in this blog post offers three reasons why she considered taking on a leadership role in education. For starters, becoming a teacher leader allowed her to more effectively voice her opinions to final decision-makers, and reach students outside the classroom on a broader scale. In addition, professional growth opportunities have inspired her to improve her own practice and help others as well, she writes. Education Week Teacher/Leading from the Classroom blog

- How should teacher effectiveness be measured?
Standardized test scores that only assess students' knowledge of the official tested curriculum is not an accurate measure of a teacher's effectiveness in the classroom, writes Spanish-language teacher Riana Good. Teacher evaluations, like student assessments, must consist of multiple measures -- including a mix of assessment-based rubrics and portfolios -- that rate both tested academic progress and "taught and learned" curricula, Good writes. - Choicelunch program lets parents order students' meals online
A program called Choicelunch will be offered in the fall at Del Mar Union School District in San Diego, allowing parents to order their children's lunches online or from a smartphone application using a menu of 17 options. Registered dietitian Jodi Block helped develop Choicelunch as a way to improve the quality of lunches, and says it will give parents more control over what their children eat. KSWB-TV (San Diego)

- N.J. report says per-student spending dropped last year
The latest School Report Card for New Jersey shows the state's average per-student spending was down last year by $416 from the previous year, according to figures released on Thursday. The accuracy of the report, which is based on a new method of calculation, has been questioned by some superintendents who say flawed enrollment data for their districts have affected the figures. - Pa. districts plan to cut instructional programs to balance budgets
A recent survey has found that budget considerations will force many Pennsylvania school districts to cut instructional programs in the 2012-13 school year. Districts report plans to increase class size, delay purchasing new textbooks, cut down on electives and extended learning programs for struggling students, and reduce or eliminate summer school programs and student field trips. Districts also reported they would have to dip into reserve funds to balance their budgets. Education Week/District Dossier blog

- Mass. plans to overhaul struggling urban school district
Massachusetts schools chief Mitchell Chester has unveiled a plan intended to improve achievement at one of the state's lowest-performing school districts. The plan, which follows a November decision by the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to place the Lawrence school system into receivership, calls for increased instructional time, the improvement of English-language learner programs, the empowerment of educators and other stakeholders and a key partnership with several charter schools. If successful, the overhaul plan could serve as a model for fixing other urban systems in the state. The Boston Globe (tiered subscription model)
