- Rose explains LNG locomotive project; other Class I's follow suit
BNSF's plan to test the feasibility of natural gas as a fuel alternative for locomotives was driven by cost factors, said BNSF Chairman and CEO Matt Rose during the IHS CERAWeek energy summit. Canadian National announced similar plans earlier, and other Class I's are showing interest. Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific are partnering with locomotive manufacturers on the idea, while CSX is reviewing the viability of natural gas-fueled trains. FuelFix.com

- House passes interim measure to avert U.S. government shutdown
The House of Representatives passed a bill in a 267-151 vote that would fund U.S. government programs through Sept. 30 to avoid a March 27 shutdown. Some attendees of a dinner meeting between President Barack Obama and Senate Republican leaders are more optimistic that Democrats and Republicans can reach an agreement on the budget and debt. - Company chooses site in La. for $150M project because of CN, KCS
Canadian National and Kansas City Southern's operations in Baton Rouge, La., led Belgium-based Katoen Natie to choose the area for a new $150 million petrochemical facility, said Frank Vingerhoets, the company's president of petrochemicals in North America. The project is expected to provide around 900 direct and indirect jobs, state officials said. Construction is scheduled to be completed by 2018. The Times-Picayune (New Orleans)

- Colo. DOT ramps up safety initiatives with 52 LED stop signs
The Colorado Department of Transportation acquired 52 pieces of CTC's LED warning signs to strengthen rail safety across 26 grade crossings in the state. "Any tool that we can use to save lives is a welcome addition to our transportation tool kit," said Mat Flores, state DOT statewide utilities engineer.
