Diabetes in Focus
Increased diabetes rates coincide with obesity epidemic
Data published in the Annals of Internal Medicine revealed the prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. grew from 4.7% to 11.2% in men and from 5.7% to 8.7% in women between 1976-1980 and 2007-2010. Researchers said the worsening obesity epidemic was highly correlated to increased diabetes rates, but BMI failed to fully explain the higher disease rates in men. Americans are eating a better diet, study says
Americans overall are eating a higher-quality diet, but more affluent people have better diets than those at lower income levels, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health reported in JAMA Internal Medicine. The study, which involved more than 29,000 adults, found that more than 50% of the improvement seen in a 10-year span came from eating fewer trans fats, but people also are choosing more fruits and whole grains and fewer sugar-sweetened beverages. Review: Diet plans work regardless of brand
A review of 11 popular diets revealed all plans resulted in weight loss among overweight or obese participants, with low-fat and low-carb diets being the most successful. The results in the Journal of the American Medical Association also showed different diet brands within each category didn't differ significantly. Reuters (9/2)

Transition away from pediatric care may prove difficult for some patients
Research published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that about a third of pediatric patients with chronic disease were satisfied after switching to an adult physician, while one-fifth expressed dissatisfaction with the transition. Young patients who characterized their new doctors as patient-centered tended to be happier with the change, as did male patients. Reuters (9/2)

Incentives, technical help with EHR implementation associated with better care
A study in Medical Care revealed EHR use alone may not bolster care quality among small practices, but providing incentives and assistance may improve care delivery. Data on 143 practices showed a significant improvement in performance among those that received financial incentives compared with those who did not, while better performance was seen among practices given technical assistance for certain measures.
