- DOD freezes hiring, cuts temporary workforce
Thousands of temporary employees are being given layoff notices at the Pentagon, one of a series of measures the Defense Department is taking in advance of expected spending cuts. The department's other moves include putting ship repairs on hold and implementing hiring freezes. Experts say even deeper cuts would need to be put in place to cope with sequestration if it occurs March 1. The Wall Street Journal

- Sequestration could cut $19B in Army readiness, chief of staff says
Sequestration would affect Army training, the CH-47F Chinook helicopter program and other budgets that total $17 billion to $19 billion in Army readiness, says Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno, who warned the cuts could create "a hollow force." "We'll very quickly go to extremely low levels of readiness in the next six months throughout the Army," he said. AOL Defense

Gulfstream reported growth for 2012 as solid demand continued for its business jets. Jeff Smisek, CEO of United Continental Holdings, is expressing his continued confidence in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and its popularity with fliers. The Federal Aviation Administration grounded the aircraft this month over safety concerns regarding its batteries. "The aircraft is a terrific aircraft, and customers love the aircraft, and I have no doubt that customers will flock back to that airplane once we're able to get it back up again," Smisek said.
