Video conferences between ICU clinicians and radiologists could create better relationships between these specialists and improve care in both areas, according to a report in the Journal of the American College of Radiology. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia implemented virtual rounding in its pediatric and neonatal ICUs, and a survey of participants showed 68% said they experienced a moderate improvement in confidence, while 20% said there was major improvement.
A study in the journal Circulation found hospitals that have successful cardiac arrest resuscitation teams are more likely to have increased survival rates, compared with other facilities. Characteristics of successful resuscitation teams in top-performing hospitals included having a designated team with clinicians from diverse disciplines, clearly defined responsibilities, improved leadership and communication, and in-depth mock codes.

A new Pennsylvania law requires health care providers to notify the state's Department of Human Services about newborns or babies younger than 1 with prenatal drug exposure, neonatal abstinence syndrome or other withdrawal symptoms, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. The law also establishes a multidisciplinary team that will immediately assess the need for child-protective custody or other services and develop care plans for drug-exposed babies.
A study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that US veterans have a lower chance of getting a kidney transplant compared to patients with Medicare or private insurance. Only 15% of veterans use Department of Veterans Affairs kidney transplant centers for their operations, of which there are seven across the country, and they have to travel an average distance of 282 miles from their homes to these facilities, versus 22 miles for those who are covered by Medicare or private insurance.
Geisinger Medical Center near Danville, Pa., has opened a trauma ICU and now has four dedicated ICU areas, including trauma, medical-surgical, cardiovascular and neuroscience. The trauma ICU is connected to the hospital's electronic ICU system, which also includes ICUs at several other system hospitals.
