ViaSat 2 to significantly increase ViaSat's broadband capacity
ViaSat's new ViaSat 2 satellite will expand the company's broadband internet service coverage seven-fold, enabling the company to increase its offerings in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and part of South America, the company says. Boeing is expected to build two more satellites for ViaSat under its ViaSat 3 line.

AT&T's DIRECTV Now has introduced its first national TV spot for the over-the-top service, with actor Mark Wahlberg touting a new promotion plus the absence of both a set-top box and a long-term contract.

Russian rocket sends up US satellite
A Russian rocket with a US communications satellite aboard successfully launched from a Kazakhstan facility Thursday. The Proton-M booster rocket, which encountered an engine problem in a 2016 launch, sent the EchoStar 21 satellite into orbit.

Fox adds national live stream to Hulu in select markets
Fox has added a 24-hour national feed to Hulu across more than 70 markets where affiliates don't have streaming agreements with the network. The feed features nightly news and programming, as well as daytime content from other Fox-owned stations, including Fox News, Fox Business and National Geographic.

Visa explores contactless pay tokens
Visa has created a contactless sticker that can be used to make payments by using tokenization to replace sensitive data with a digital identifier. Visa created the technology to be used with home devices, allowing consumers to make purchases just by tapping connected items.

Amazon's Alexa may be coming to a set-top box near you

Amazon has released a set of tools for cable providers and streaming companies that will enable customers to control their TVs through virtual assistant Alexa. Providers can update their connected boxes to allow customers to navigate channels, search for content and perform other hands-free functions through Amazon's voice-activated devices.

Study: Older Americans going mobile for news
Two-thirds of US adults age 65 or older accessed news on mobile devices in March, as did 8 in 10 adults in the 50 to 64 age bracket, according to the Pew Research Center. Both figures are up sharply from a year before, indicating that older Americans are catching up to their younger counterparts in mobile news consumption.
