  • Ban on milk varieties will affect consumption, IDFA says
Although the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act requires schools to serve dairy products as part of a balanced meal, the International Dairy Foods Association is worried that the law's ban on flavored milk and any milk that is not low fat or fat free will reduce overall consumption. "Eliminating low-fat flavored milks, which kids like, and still allowing a wide variety a la carte beverages like juice beverages, sports drinks and soda at schools will reduce milk consumption," said President and CEO Connie Tipton. "When beverages other than milk, 100% juice and water are offered, total milk consumption at school drops 9% to 28%." EducationNews.org (1/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Calorie reduction appears key to weight loss in any diet plan
A study found no significant difference in weight and fat reduction after six months among participants who followed one of four weight-loss diets, all of which cut about 750 calories per day. The finding, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests that simply cutting back on calories might be the key to weight loss, regardless of the diet plan used, researchers said. • Fla. bill would ban junk-food purchases with food stamps
A Florida bill sponsored by Republican state Sen. Ronda Storms would prohibit people from using food stamps to buy "nonstaple, unhealthy foods."
