- U.S. military braces for effect of sequestration
U.S. military leaders have issued directives to cut budgets and freeze hiring in case sequestration comes to pass March 1. "We are on the brink of creating a hollow force due to an unprecedented convergence of budget conditions and legislation that could require the [Defense] department to retain more forces than requested, while underfunding that force's readiness," the Joint Chiefs of Staff wrote in a letter last week to the Senate Committee on Armed Services. - Pentagon grounds F-35Bs due to engine problem
The Pentagon has grounded the F-35B (STOVL) variant after issues were discovered with the fueldraulic system. "An initial inspection discovered a detached fueldraulic line in the aft portion of the engine compartment near the bearing swivel module," said Pratt & Whitney spokesman Matthew Bates. Defense News

- Panetta meets with U.S. troops stationed in Italy
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta met with members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team last week. During his visit with the troops stationed in Italy, he urged Congress to address military funding. "You guys go out and you put your lives on the line, you take the worst risk of all -- which is that somebody may shoot you and you may die," Panetta said. - NTSB rules out excess voltage as cause of 787 issue
The National Transportation Safety Board has eliminated excess voltage as a possible cause of a battery fire aboard the Boeing Dreamliner 787. "Examination of the flight recorder data from the JAL B-787 airplane indicates that the APU (auxiliary power unit) battery did not exceed its designed voltage of 32 volts," the NTSB said in a statement. - FAA struggles to keep up with new technology, critics say
Some critics are questioning whether the Federal Aviation Administration has the technical expertise to oversee advancements such as the composite Boeing Dreamliner 787. However, Boeing defended the FAA's methods. "We are confident in the regulatory process that has been applied to the 787 since its design inception," said Boeing spokesman Marc Birtel. - Japanese supplier for 787 batteries is also NASA provider
Japanese firm GS Yuasa Corp., which supplies batteries for the Boeing Dreamliner 787, also has a contract with NASA. GS Yuasa won a contract last year to supply lithium-ion battery cells to assist with powering the International Space Station. "Once Boeing finishes its investigations it will update us on whatever they find is the root cause of the problems," said Josh Byerly, a NASA spokesman. Bloomberg

Rockwell Collins has reported a profit of $132 million for its fiscal first quarter, compared with a profit of $130 million for the same quarter of the prior year. The company supplies avionics and other electronic systems for aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Reuters
