- Industry awaits potential backlash in China on security issues
With Huawei Technologies and ZTE having been identified in a congressional report as possible threats to U.S. national security, American vendors of networking equipment are wondering whether their products will be subject to a backlash in China. "There's a chance China says, 'If our players are getting a hard time doing business abroad, then we should give a hard time to the Western players doing business in China,' " said Pierre Ferragu, an analyst with Sanford Bernstein. - Sprint reportedly wants more information before pursuing MetroPCS
Sprint Nextel's directors have decided to bide their time before deciding whether to pursue MetroPCS, after the prepaid carrier's agreement to merge with T-Mobile USA, according to a published report. The board last week opted to review T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom's proxy filing -- a document that describes how the deal came about -- before making a decision. Time is apparently not of the essence yet: Sprint may have up to three months to offer a counterbid. Bloomberg

- Juniper adds new features to MX family of edge routers
Juniper Networks has introduced two edge routers -- including an updated version of its flagship MX -- as well as a series of enhancements to the line designed to support rapid application deployment. The MX 2020 3D Universal Edge Router is a 20-slot, full-rack version that supports 80 Tbps of capacity, while the smaller MX 2010 handles half that capacity. Juniper also has bolstered the MX line with Virtual Chassis capabilities and has added technology that enables administrators to more efficiently program the routers. Network World

- Avaya targets SMBs with expanded outsourcing program
Avaya wants to accelerate its push into communications outsourcing to target small and midsize business, which, analysts say, are feeling increasing pressure from complex support systems, multiple vendors and mounting customer demands. The company plans to add a number of new features to its managed hosted communications service -- which was launched in February -- including "express" UC, Unified Messaging and Video solutions and a Managed Assist offering that will provide comprehensive management and troubleshooting of a company's communications infrastructure. - Verizon offers SMBs hosted PBX, unified communications
Verizon Enterprise Solutions has introduced Virtual Communications Express, a cloud-based PBX and unified communications service for small and medium-size businesses. The monthly cost for the service is $35 per user, along with Polycom phones that can be rented for $10 to $15 a month. Verizon said the service would support Android and iOS mobile devices by early next year. Telecompetitor.com
