  • Temporary spending bill pushes back DOD furloughs
Furlough notices for civilian Pentagon employees are on hold for two weeks as the department combs through a continuing resolution spending bill just passed by Congress. The measure appears to free up some funds that could shrink the number of furlough days for Pentagon workers. The delay means the first furlough notices are set to go out April 5. • Defense analysts: DOD must carry out sequester cuts
The Pentagon should begin tackling the factors that drive up spending and start planning for sequestration cuts, defense analysts say, rather than hoping Congress will reverse the sequester. The Defense Department must work to contain and shrink the climbing costs of acquisition, payroll and overhead, they say. "The reality is they need to start planning for this staying in effect, and even if they start right now it's a little too late," said Todd Harrison, a defense budget analyst at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. • Senate committee hears privacy concerns over UAVs
A Senate Judiciary Committee hearing weighed the privacy concerns for UAVs after a group of organizations submitted a petition to halt U.S. Customs and Border Protection from flying unmanned aerial vehicles. "Before we allow widespread commercial use of drones in the domestic airspace, we need to carefully consider the impact on the privacy rights of Americans," said Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, D-Vt. • U.S. to rebuild stock of space plutonium
The U.S. will begin producing new plutonium to power space exploration where solar arrays won't work, a move that will rebuild the shrinking plutonium stockpile. NASA, which hopes to use the fuel to further explore Mars and on other space missions, will get the plutonium from a Tennessee lab. The lab will have Department of Energy oversight. • Urgent call to action – write Congress and the White House to repeal sequestration
Because of the White House's and Congress' inability to reach a deal to reverse sequestration, the initial round of multibillion cuts to defense and non-defense federal agencies has begun. Although these cuts are now being implemented, it is not too late to repeal this bad policy and develop a balanced, bi-partisan solution to our nation's debt and deficit problem. Now is the time to reach out to your elected officials to communicate the urgent need to repeal sequestration. Go to the Second to None website to send a letter to your elected officials in Washington today. LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
