NYC racetrack redevelopment plans would create thousands of construction jobs

A 26,000-seat soccer stadium and an 18,000-seat hockey arena, each with accompanying retail and entertainment space, have been proposed for Belmont Park in New York City and could create 4,500 and 5,500 construction jobs, respectively. The Empire State Development Corp. will select one of the two proposals in the next few months.

Plans for Bronx mixed-use development expanded
Azimuth Development Group is upping the planned units for 1755 Watson Ave. in Soundview in the Bronx to 326 from the original 250. The nine-story project will include nearly 283,000 square feet of residential, commercial and community space.

Port Authority allocates $1B-plus for airport renovations

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey approved an $8 billion budget for 2018, including more than $1 billion to renovate airports run by the agency. LaGuardia Airport's redevelopment will get $578 million for the year, while Newark Liberty International Airport's will get $167 million.

Halcyon adds 3rd building to Greenpoint project
A 33-story tower is the latest addition to Halcyon Management's plans for what is now a three-building waterfront residential complex in Brooklyn's Greenpoint. The new structure will hold 366,608 square feet of space and 410 apartments.

Insurance companies see wearable technology as way to reduce injury claims, which can reduce construction costs. If "you can mitigate the incidents that have already happened or prevent incidents that have not happened, then you're going to see claims go down," according to a recent report by McKinsey & Co.

Project management theory developed when construction projects followed the lines of an industrial model are a poor fit for today's largest projects, consultant Robert Prieto writes. What's needed is a new framework that, among other things, consistently communicates changes in desired outcomes and includes risk models that fully account for what are perceived as low-probability risks.

Company designing robots to work on construction sites

Trump administration officials are finalizing a plan that would allocate $200 billion or more to spur investment in a $1 trillion infrastructure package, and they could push toward adoption of a plan in January. There appears to be support for infrastructure spending among many groups, but many in Congress are not in favor of increased spending on infrastructure.
