- SNM's Atcher comments on planned Dutch reactor shutdown
The planned shutdown of the Dutch reactor for repairs starting Feb. 19 next year until the end of August will result in only a two- to three-week shortage in supply of medical isotopes because the reactors in Belgium, France and South Africa have coordinated and agreed to take measures to alleviate anticipated problems, said Robert Atcher, chairman of SNM's Domestic Isotope Availability Committee. The problem would worsen only if the Canadian reactor does not get back on operation as scheduled, Atcher said. DOTMed.com

- PET with CT, MRI more effective for carotid artery plaque assessment
PET imaging is effective in assessing plaque inflammation, but it needs to be combined with CT and MRI for more effective evaluation of carotid artery plaque, Dutch researchers said. CT measures more volume of lipid-rich necrotic core and calcifications while MRI detects more fibrous tissue, the study said. "Future prospective longitudinal studies should determine which imaging modality is most effective in predicting a future stroke and thus in improving patient selection for surgery," a researcher said. - Experts: Potential treatment shortage in Iran could hurt patients
Iranian doctors and nuclear scientists fear that about 850,000 kidney, heart and cancer patients in the country will be put at risk when the fuel runs out at a research reactor in Tehran, causing the patients to miss out on much-needed nuclear medicine treatments. The possible treatment shortage would stem from Iran's continuing dispute with world leaders regarding fuel supply for the reactor. The Washington Post
