  • Cement trade group forecasts 2010 recovery due to stimulus
The Portland Cement Association forecasts economic recovery for the cement industry by 2010 because of stimulus funding for infrastructure. "By the second half of 2010, stimulus spending should enter a phase that includes more traditional infrastructure projects that carry higher cement intensities," said Edward Sullivan, chief economist for PCA. The trade group predicts a 7% increase in cement consumption for 2010, offsetting annual double-digit declines since 2007. Modern Distribution Management (5/4) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Recruit wisely during downturn to prepare for recovery

Researchers say even now, companies are struggling to replace retiring baby boomers and to find staff in emerging markets, yet some companies are woefully off the mark in their hiring practices. • Wine industry in Washington state blossoms
During the past couple of decades, Washington's wine industry has exploded with more than 600 wineries currently licensed in the state. "There are a lot of winery-visiting opportunities in Woodinville (near Seattle), where there are about 40 wineries. They have events that draw quite a crowd, and that is fun," said Chris Stone, marketing director for the Washington Wine Commission. "But there's such an allure to anyone who loves wine to get out where the grapes are grown, get out among the vineyards and feel like you're in wine country." The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Wash.)
