- International sourcing leads to higher inventories
A slowing U.S. economy is only one of the reasons that raw materials are being held in inventory three times longer than they were three years ago, according to a report on warehousing. More complicated supply chains -- including more sourcing from overseas -- is another major cause of higher inventories. "What's happening is making sense. - Central Virginia beer distributor a family affair
When Leon Stepanian Sr. bought Loveland Distributing Co. from founder Lewis Loveland in 1958, the name was never changed to Stepanian because, "We probably didn't have enough money to change the stationery," his son, Leon Stepanian Jr., jokes. He's now chairman of an operation that has more than 170 employees and distributes 200-plus brands of beer, along with bottled water and soft drinks, to 1,600 customers in the central Virginia area. Stepanian Jr.'s own son, Mark Stepanian, serves as the beer distributor's president and CEO. Richmond Times-Dispatch (Va.)

- Fliers upset with minimum-stay airline requirements
Thought by many to be a thing of the past, airlines have revived minimum-stay requirements to the ire of many passengers, especially business travelers. Citing increasing expenses, especially fuel-related costs, airlines are working every angle to boost revenues. With Saturday-night stay or minimum-stay requirements, airlines bet that many business travelers will opt for a more expensive fare instead of opting to stay on the road over the weekend. USA TODAY

- In wines, could pink be the new red?
Dry rose wines are finding their way onto more restaurant and bar menus as the quality continues to increase. "While rose might not be the favorite out of your wine cellar collection, it may be the wine to pick to pair with the most dishes in your culinary library," said one wine maker.
