IAB SmartBrief Special Report
December 9, 2008

Editor's Viewpoint

Looking back at 2008
If it was not for the credit crunch and economic downturn that has dominated the news since September, 2008 would be remembered as the year of social media.

The year saw a presidential election driven in part by social networking, the rise of Facebook as an interactive platform and the rapid spread of mobile interactivity through the popular iPhone.

IAB rolled out a slew of initiatives in 2008, including campaign measurement guidelines, e-mail data management best practices, a digital video ad-serving template and more. IAB hosted another sold-out MIXX Conference and Expo, and at the MIXX Awards ceremony, handed out 55 honors across 18 categories.

Business news saw the rapid proliferation of ad networks, and Web portal Yahoo! successfully staving off a takeover attempt by Microsoft, only to see a search ad sharing deal with Google fall prey to regulatory concerns.

This IAB SmartBrief special year-end report wraps up a busy year in the interactive media and advertising space. Part I highlights the most important trends, stories and events of 2008. Part II, which will hit your inbox Thursday, will provide a glimpse into what's in store for 2009.

Here's what was most important to you in 2008, as voted on by the clicks of IAB SmartBrief readers.
