Cisco joins forces with EMC and VMWare for enterprise alliance
The companies say the Virtual Computing Environment partnership will allow them to combine networking, storage and software to promote data center virtualization and cloud computing. Experts debate cloud use in universities
Last week's Educause conference featured a debate between Melissa Woo, director of cyberinfrastructure at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Michael Dieckmann, chief information officer at the University of West Florida, about the need for cloud computing in higher education. Woo argued concerns about reliability and privacy should give educators pause, while Dieckmann pointed to increased efficiency and cost savings as reasons for schools to adopt clouds. Network World (11/5)

Cybersecurity Awareness Act to prompt NIST for new standards
The House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation voted earlier this month in favor of a bill directing the National Institute of Standards and Technology to create a road map for federal compliance with international cybersecurity protocols. Study: SaaS market to grow 17.7% this year
Customer-relationship management programs and office suites that focus on content, communications and collaboration will drive the Software-as-a-Service industry to $7.5 billion in sales this year, a 17.7% increase over last year, according to Gartner. Report: PaaS category to hit $15 billion by 2016
The Platform-as-a-Service category, an area just beginning to attract the attention of independent software vendors and resellers, will grow to become a $15 billion market by 2016, according to research from Forrester.
