Optimism falls, jobless rate rises in August
Optimism among small-business owners retracted in August, according to the NFIB membership survey being released today. As the unemployment rate rose to 9.7%, the highest level since 1983, the optimism rate of NFIB members fell 1.3 points to 86.5 in August. "The job generating machine is still in reverse," says William C. Dunkelberg, the organization's chief economist.
