Kroger stores have started selling Snack It Forward's Peatos, a pea-based puffed snack that was introduced in March. "The response to Peatos has been overwhelming, and social media buzz is off the charts," says Nick Desai, Snack It Forward's CEO.
Kroger is adding a second, stand-alone location this fall for its Kitchen 1883 restaurant concept in Ohio. The grocer has learned from its initial venture, it says, and is taking that knowledge into both dining concepts and fresh grocery food offerings.
Activism organization Care2 says it has more than 96,000 signatures on an online petition asking Kroger to create a plastic-free aisle in each of its 2,300 locations. The group says it is modeling its request on Dutch supermarket chain Ekoplaza, which introduced a plastic-free aisle last month.
Some retailers are working fast to open automated, unstaffed stores similar to Amazon Go in Seattle and Alibaba's 35 Hema stores in China. Walmart and Kroger are testing scan-and-go technology and China's JD.com is planning hundreds of unstaffed stores.
FedEx has helped an Indiana trade school program build another home as a way to give back to the community while teaching construction trade skills. The Area 31 Career Center has been building homes in its community since 2016 with sponsorships from companies like FedEx, Kroger and Lowe's.
