Google+ could end up a minus, but it’s worth a try

SmartPulse — our weekly nonscientific reader poll in SmartBrief on Small Business — tracks feedback from small-business owners. We run the poll question each Thursday in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: What do you think about Google+?

  • I’m not interested; I need another social media account like I need a hole in my head: 46.30%
  • I have an account but haven’t done much with it: 22.22%
  • I don’t have an account, but I look forward to getting one: 18.52%
  • I’ve already signed on and can’t wait for branded accounts to become available: 12.96%

I totally understand and empathize with this response. As much as I like technology and social media, there are only so many hours in a day. That said, a recent Copyblogger article about Google+ gave me serious pause, particularly the part about how sharing content on Google+ factors into Google’s search rankings.

If your business relies on the Internet as part of its marketing strategy, it might be prudent to check out Google+. Whether it benefits your company remains to be seen, because it’s still pretty new. I’m only suggesting that you don’t delete your invitation without giving it a try. It is Google, after all.
