Major US retailers have furloughed about 600,000 employees as the pandemic has forced them to shutter stores. J.C. Penney has temporarily laid off most of its 85,000 workers with the promise of continuing to cover health benefits for full-timers, and Sephora has cut seasonal and part-time employees while keeping about 9,000 store staffers on the payroll through at least May.
